| Diving in Belgium |

Like The Netherlands, Belgium probably doesn't strike you as the most likely or exotic place to dive. Despite that, scuba diving is a very populair sport in Belgium. De diving industry is professionalising rapidly. Various organisations are specialising themselves in diving education or underwater photography, and are helping to grow the number of active divers. Special dive locationsThere are various rivers and lakes in Belgium where you can go scuba diving. Many Belgians also dive in the North Sea or just across the borden in Zeeland. Next to that, some diving organisations have gone out of their way to create interesting dive locations. Think for example about indoor diving in Nemo 33 in Bruxelles or the underwater museum in the Silver Lake in Mol. We have visited these two in 2008 and 2009 and were impressed about the potential. Cold water divingFor divng in Belgium you need a drysuit or a nice double 7 semi-dry suit. The water temparatures are likely to be between 15 and 18 degrees Celcius during the summer. Lakes can freeze over during the winter. Like many other cold water areas, the marine life is not as colorful or as plentyful as in the tropics and visibility can be very poor indeed. However, Belgium scuba organisations are making the most of it. It is worth it to check Belgium out yourself. |
